Beyond the Space Barrier - Hacking IoT and OT Systems at a Global Scale

As connected vehicles, industrial systems, drones, and other cyber-physical technologies become increasingly integrated into critical infrastructure, the discovery and remediation of vulnerabilities within IoT and operational technology (OT) environments has become a matter of both economic and national security. However, hands-on security research and training for these systems remain constrained by limited hardware access, high costs, and geographic barriers. This session explores how the SHEATHE remote cyber-physical security lab platform addresses these challenges by enabling secure, scalable remote access to real embedded and connected hardware systems. Through real-world case studies, attendees will see how vulnerabilities in automotive and IoT platforms were identified, validated, and triaged using remotely accessible lab infrastructure. The presentation will demonstrate how hardware-in-the-loop testing can accelerate vulnerability research, improve collaboration among geographically distributed researchers, and support more effective security validation for critical systems. In addition, the session will highlight the growing role of remote lab platforms in developing the next generation of cyber-physical security professionals by providing accessible, hands-on training with real hardware environments.Attendees will gain insight into how remote security labs can strengthen vulnerability research, workforce development, and long-term resilience across critical industries including automotive, aerospace, maritime, and industrial systems. A live demo of an IoT system exploitation will be performed remotely in this session.
