Investigating the illusion: A Technical Approach to Deepfakes Forensic Investigations

AI-generated media has saturated the digital landscape, where a single viral deepfake media ruins a life or reputation in an irreversible manner. The AI generated media have become the new playground for adversaries, starting from simply changing a certain media file's context of some individuals to complete false media that serve the adversaries' agenda, and spread misinformation, and disinformation.Over the years GAN remained the standard for high-fidelity identity swapping, but the emergence of diffusion models has forced the forensics analysts to rewrite forensic landscape. What makes things worse, adversaries are weaponizing RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to ground synthetic media in hyper-personalized context, create a specter of an individual so accurate that it bypasses human skepticism. This talk will present the methodology to how to investigate and analyze the deepfake media generated by diffusion models, how to assess them professionally, and what are the elements that we can stand on to ascertain the validity of the media and whether it's authentic or AI-generated. The talk will address also how to build a functional framework that through it we can implement a standardized approach to properly investigate deepfake media. This talk will conclude with addressing how to handle deepfakes or synthetic media in forensically sound and correct manner, what are the artifacts that we can extract to assess the authenticity of deepfake media, how to use techniques like heatmap, Error Level Analysis (ELA), Laplacian Variance to analyze the media in question, and how to implement a functioning framework for deepfake media analysis.
