Securing Space: The Next Frontier for Security Engineers
Civilization runs on space infrastructure, from GPS timing to Starlink internet, yet the orbital attack surface remains a black box to most security engineers. This talk bridges traditional infosec and orbital mechanics with a technical state of the state on space system security. We dissect the satellite ecosystem across its space, ground, link, and user segments, then analyze real failures: the 2022 Viasat AcidRain wiper that crippled European communications via a compromised ground station, plus GPS spoofing and Starlink jamming in active conflict zones. Beyond headlines, we get into the engineering: exploiting unencrypted TT&C command uplinks, weaponizing $300 software-defined radios for interception and injection, and memory-corruption bugs in CCSDS protocol parsers.Attendees leave being able to threat-model orbital assets using STRIDE and SPARTA, with a clear view on CubeSat, cloud ground-segment, and supply-chain risk, and the controls (SDLS, SPD-5, NIST SP 800-59) to secure them.
